Cinnamon Hotels I World Ocean Day
Protecting our oceans is a vital part of our sustainable tourism and conservation efforts. Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts was the first to launch sustainable whale watching in the East Coast through Cinnamon Nature Trails - encouraging the villagers to be a part of our sustainable tourism efforts since 2009.
Each year, our teams have been recording unusually high numbers of sperm whales off the seas in Trincomalee. This phenomenon has now been identified as the Super Pods of sperm whales, and the team began collating data to understand the reasons for these mega congregations in Trinco, as well as in Mirissa and Kalpitiya. In 2018, through our whale tracking initiative, we were able to identify 27 individual Blue Whales that call Trincomalee home.
In Maldives, we are part of an initiative that encourages the protection of a minimum of 80% of sea grass around the islands for the benefit of the environment, tourism, fisheries and livelihoods dependent on this. This is a reaffirmation of our continuous commitment to marine conservation.
